“Designing a presentation without an audience in mind is like writing a love letter and addressing it ‘to whom it may concern.’” Ken Haemer
A few days ago, a client sent me a presentation with slides full of graphs and asked me to design them so they would be clear and understandable.
When I asked her, "Who is the audience? What do they expect? What characterizes them?" she replied, "It doesn't matter, just design the slides with the graphs as you know how."
But here's the thing: In order to present data for decision-making, I must know my audience—what interests them, what’s most important to them, what’s less relevant, how likely they are to support or oppose the topic, and how much they understand or control the issue.
Only then can I decide which data stories to highlight, which ones to leave out, the order in which to present them, and the best way to convey the information.
Know your audience is the most important part of presenting data for decision-making.
Don't be a beginner! 😊
